John 1: What Happens When God’s Word Lives in You

Am I Walking With God or With Satan? Understanding Spiritual Alignment Through the Word

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” — John 1:1

If the Word is God, then learning God’s Word and keeping it in our hearts naturally leads to an important question:

Does having the Word within me mean that I am a person who walks with God?

Every believer must confirm one essential truth:

  • Am I with God?
  • Or am I unknowingly standing with Satan?

Surprisingly, the Bible gives us a clear and practical way to discern this.

God and Satan Are Both Spirit—So How Do We Discern Them?

Both God and Satan exist as invisible spirits.
If they cannot be seen with human eyes, then how can we know which spirit is at work?

The Bible shows a consistent pattern:

  • God works through people to deliver His Word and fulfill His will.
  • Satan also works through people to spread lies and carry out his purposes.

Because both spirits work through words, the way to discern them is simple:

Listen to the words.
Words reveal the spirit behind them.

Jesus Said His Words Are Spirit and Life

Jesus Himself gave the key:

John 6:63

“The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing.
The words I have spoken to you—they are spirit and they are life.”

This means:

  • To know what spirit a person belongs to,
  • Listen to what they say and how they respond to God’s Word.

Why the Jewish Leaders Knew Scripture but Still Opposed Jesus

The Jewish leaders diligently studied the Scriptures, yet they rejected Jesus—the very fulfillment of those Scriptures.

This reveals a critical truth:

  • They knew God’s Word intellectually
  • But they did not believe or obey it
  • Therefore, they became instruments of Satan and opposed God

Simply knowing Scripture is not the same as being aligned with God.

True Faith Is Not Knowledge—It Is Obedience to God’s Will

Jesus warned that not everyone who calls Him “Lord” will enter heaven.

Matthew 7:21

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven,
but only the one who does the will of my Father.”

Meanwhile,

  • Jewish leaders kept the Law but rejected God’s Son
  • Jesus’ disciples kept Jesus’ words and belonged to the Kingdom of Heaven

What was the difference?
Their response to God’s Word.

God Reveals Himself Through Fulfilled Prophecy

The Bible teaches:

Amos 3:7

“Surely the Sovereign LORD does nothing
without revealing His plan to His servants the prophets.”

A true believer:

  • Believes the Word of prophecy
  • Watches for its fulfillment
  • Accepts and obeys the Word when it is fulfilled

Faith is tested in whether we respond to God’s fulfilled Word with belief or rejection.

How to Discern Who Someone Belongs To: The Biblical Standard

1. Those Who Belong to God Hear and Believe God’s Word

Jesus made the standard unmistakably clear:

John 8:31

“If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.”

John 8:47

“He who belongs to God hears what God says.
The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”

A person’s attitude toward God’s Word reveals their spiritual identity.

  • Those who belong to God welcome, believe, and keep His Word.
  • Those who reject the Word show they do not belong to God.

2. Those Who Belong to Satan Speak Lies and Reject Truth

Jesus identified the spiritual origin of the Jewish leaders:

John 8:44

“You belong to your father, the devil…
he is a liar and the father of lies.”

The principle here is simple:

  • God’s people love truth
  • Satan’s people resist truth and spread lies

What comes out of a person’s mouth reveals which spirit is influencing them.

When the Word Remains in You, God Remains With You

Jesus promised that God dwells with the one who keeps His Word.

John 14:23

“Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching.
My Father will love them, and we will come to them
and make our home with them.”

If the Word is in you, God is in you.
If the Word is rejected, God is not present.

This is the biblical definition of who walks with God.

Conclusion: The Word Reveals Who We Truly Are

Jesus said:

John 10:27

“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”

The test is simple and eternal:

  • Do I listen to God’s Word?
  • Do I believe it?
  • Do I keep it?

If yes—God is with you.
If not—something else is guiding your steps.

Your alignment is shown not by emotions or outward appearance,
but by your relationship to the Word of God.
